HybriPed's Model Regulations Outline



HybriPed has developed an outline of model regulations for hybrid pedal-motor vehicles, being Power-assisted pedal cycle and motorised pedal cycle.

Cornerstones of HybriPed's position are; Roads and bicycle paths require separate approaches, on-road safety benefits, sustainable transportation and environment benefits and compatible with the ideals of anti-discrimination legislation in Australia.

Primary use on roads, secondary use on paths with motor disengaged.

Power-assisted Pedal Cycle (as proposed by the NSW Centre for Road Safety (RTA)
Primary use on paths, secondary use on roads
  • Speed at which power assistance cuts out: 25km/h;
  • Maximum power: 250 watts;
  • Power cuts out when rider stops pedaling;
  • Permitted on bicycle paths
  • Vehicle Registration: Not required
  • Competency/Licensing: Unlicensed Riders




Call for road rules review
These eminent persons support a call for a review of regulations that prohibit legal use of hybrid pedal/ motor vehicles on Australian roads and that their sustainability merits are such that this be high priority.
