HybriPed has embarked on an ambitious project to establish Hybrid Pedal Power as a practical, environmentally responsible, relatively safe and sustainable mode of personal mobility.
In many parts of the world, motorized bicycle enthusiasts get a hard time. The United States EPA is due to implement regulations that will prohibit importation of very climate-friendly 2-stroke bicycle motors. In Australia, motorized bicycles are effectively prohibited on roads. Where are the climate impact statements of both these regulatory jurisdictions? It is about time someone articulated the benefits of very light motorized bicycles which can double as conventional bicycles. That time has arrived!
First picture: HybriPed commutes 40 kilometres between work and home, including a 450m climb up Mount Wellington outside Hobart, several days per week. Under Hybrid Pedal Power, 160 kilometres/litre is achievable.
Second Picture: HybriPed's display at the Sustainable Living Expo in Hobart, Tasmania (Australia) in November 2008. The HybriPed display was the first really opportunity to gauge public opinion and we were hearted by the very favourable reaction.
Third Picture: Copenhagen (left side city) is the darling of the bicycle world where 35% of workers cycle to work. The terrain of Hobart (right side city), squeezed between mountains and the Derwent Estuary, makes the 35% commuter cyclists target only a dream.
Fourth Picture: The lights of the composite picture of planet Earth are telltale signs about availability of public transport and dedicated bicycle infrastructure. Outside of the major cities in Australia, there is no silver bullet to carry us beyond Peak Oil, except vastly reduced oil demand.
Fifth Picture: A study in Oregon, USA confirms what cyclists instinctively know - there is safety in numbers (of pedals). As pedal cycle numbers increase, then safety also increases. As motorists turn away from cars, there will be more cycles and on-road safety for conventional cyclists will improve.
